Wars and deaths: Uppsala Conflict Data Program (UCDP), ucdp.uu.se/downloads, licensed CC BY 4.0. Datasets: GED, Candidate Events, Battle-Related Deaths, Non-State, ACD. A red dot is a state-based or non-state conflict listed as active (at least 25 battle-related deaths) in the UCDP/PRIO Armed Conflict or Non-State datasets for 2025, or with at least 25 deaths in 2026 UCDP Candidate data; one-sided violence against civilians is not shown as a dot; each dot sits at the median coordinates of the conflict's recent UCDP events (2026 Candidate events where available, else the latest GED year). Current-year figures are UCDP Candidate data: preliminary, may change. Citations: Davies, Pettersson & Öberg (2026), Journal of Peace Research; Sundberg & Melander (2013), JPR 50(4); Hegre et al. News link: headlines from UN News RSS feeds (all news, regional and peace-and-security sections), used under UN News’ reuse terms with attribution and a link back. A headline is shown for a war only when the headline itself names the war’s country, region or a party and uses a conflict term; most recent from the last 7 days. Only the headline, outlet, date and link are stored. Opinion pieces are excluded. The article belongs to UN News.

Dot shade: bright red = the latest UCDP-recorded event with deaths (GED / GED Candidate) falls within the 90 days before the end of the UCDP data (not today's date); faded red = no UCDP-recorded deaths in those 90 days. A faded dot does not mean a war is over.
Deaths breakdown: UCDP GED / GED Candidate event fields deaths_a, deaths_b, deaths_civilians and deaths_unknown, summed per year; shown only where the parts add up exactly to the yearly figure. UCDP does not record who started each clash.
US military personnel assigned: U.S. Department of Defense, Defense Manpower Data Center (DMDC), Location Report (active duty, assigned duty location, as of ; US government work, public domain). Assigned, unclassified personnel only; excludes temporary deployments and classified locations. Shown only for countries listed with more than zero; "ZZ-UNKNOWN" rows ignored.
Foreign military personnel: UN peacekeepers: UN Department of Peace Operations, uniformed personnel contributions by country and mission (UN Peace and Security Data Hub), via HDX, licensed CC BY-IGO 3.0; latest month (—). Troops, police, staff officers and experts on mission. The UN does not endorse this site.
Foreign military personnel: United Kingdom: Ministry of Defence, Annual Location Statistics, table 1.1b (UK Regular Forces by country, as at —).
